Palestine Justice Network - links to: help for human rights and justice for Palestine

http://www.palestinejn.org/en/act-by-country/palestine/brief-background

THURSDAY, 22 JULY 2010 17:17

These sections by country aim to put together highlights of possible actions for human rights and justice that are unique to each country (like US, Canada, Australia etc). Obviously there are also common actions that are to be done by all (e.g. campaigns like breaking the siege on Gaza).  Certainly and by nature actions in Palestine are the most significant and have led the actions for our freedom.  We in Palestine have engaged in resisting the Zionist project for 130+ years (the date of the first Zionist colony in Palestine).
We will soon put in this sections a history including selected examples of inspiring actions on the ground. We will also endeavor to help local resistance committees who do not have their own webpage by creating a webpage here for their activities. In the meantime, here is a list of local civil resistance/nonviolent struggle Groups (selected) that can be accessed to help:

http://www.lavanguardia.com/internacional/20131221/54398475841/arabes-rechazan-propuesta-de-seguridad-de-eeuu-para-futuro-estado-palestino.html

Stephen Hawking joins academic boycott of Israel

Physicist pulls out of conference hosted by president Shimon Peres in protest at treatment of Palestinians

Professor Stephen Hawking is backing the academic boycott of Israel by pulling out of a conference hosted by Israeli president Shimon Peres in Jerusalem as a protest at Israel's treatment of Palestinians.
Hawking, 71, the world-renowned theoretical physicist and former Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, had accepted an invitation to headline the fifth annual president's conference, Facing Tomorrow, in June, which features major international personalities, attracts thousands of participants and this year will celebrate Peres's 90th birthday.
Hawking is in very poor health, but last week he wrote a brief letter to the Israeli president to say he had changed his mind. He has not announced his decision publicly, but a statement published by the British Committee for the Universities of Palestine with Hawking's approval described it as "his independent decision to respect the boycott, based upon his knowledge of Palestine, and on the unanimous advice of his own academic contacts there".
Hawking's decision marks another victory in the campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions targeting Israeli academic institutions.
In April the Teachers' Union of Ireland became the first lecturers' association in Europe to call for an academic boycott of Israel, and in the United States members of the Association for Asian American Studies voted to support a boycott, the first national academic group to do so.
In the four weeks since Hawking's participation in the Jerusalem event was announced, he has been bombarded with messages from Britain and abroad as part of an intense campaign by boycott supporters trying to persuade him to change his mind. In the end, Hawking told friends, he decided to follow the advice of Palestinian colleagues who unanimously agreed that he should not attend.
Hawking's decision met with abusive responses on Facebook, with many commentators focusing on his physical condition, and some accusing him of antisemitism.
By participating in the boycott, Hawking joins a small but growing list of British personalities who have turned down invitations to visit Israel, including Elvis Costello, Roger Waters, Brian Eno, Annie Lennox and Mike Leigh.
However, many artists, writers and academics have defied and even denounced the boycott, calling it ineffective and selective. Ian McEwan, who was awarded the Jerusalem Prize in 2011, responded to critics by saying: "If I only went to countries that I approve of, I probably would never get out of bed … It's not great if everyone stops talking."
Noam Chomsky, a prominent supporter of the Palestinian cause, has said that he supports the "boycott and divestment of firms that are carrying out operations in the occupied territories" but that a general boycott of Israel is "a gift to Israeli hardliners and their American supporters".
Hawking has visited Israel four times in the past. Most recently, in 2006, he delivered public lectures at Israeli and Palestinian universities as the guest of the British embassy in Tel Aviv. At the time, he said he was "looking forward to coming out to Israel and the Palestinian territoriesand excited about meeting both Israeli and Palestinian scientists".
Since then, his attitude to Israel appears to have hardened. In 2009, Hawking denounced Israel's three-week attack on Gaza, telling Riz Khan on Al-Jazeera that Israel's response to rocket fire from Gaza was "plain out of proportion … The situation is like that of South Africa before 1990 and cannot continue."
Israel Maimon, chairman of the presidential conference said: "This decision is outrageous and wrong.
"The use of an academic boycott against Israel is outrageous and improper, particularly for those to whom the spirit of liberty is the basis of the human and academic mission. Israel is a democracy in which everyone can express their opinion, whatever it may be. A boycott decision is incompatible with open democratic discourse."
In 2011, the Israeli parliament passed a law making a boycott call by an individual or organisation a civil offence which can result in compensation liable to be paid regardless of actual damage caused. It defined a boycott as "deliberately avoiding economic, cultural or academic ties with another person or another factor only because of his ties with the State of Israel, one of its institutions or an area under its control, in such a way that may cause economic, cultural or academic damage".
• This article was amended on 8 May 2013. The original described Hawking as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. He stepped down in 2009.

Nazi crimes: Poland from 1939 to 1945: The Jewish Police

http://niemieckiezbrodnie39-45.blogspot.com/2013/04/zydowska-policja-porzadkowa.html
Nazi crimes: Poland from 1939 to 1945: The Jewish Police.

Jüdischer Ordnungsdienst - Żydowska Służba Porządkowa - Jewish Order Service (Jewish Police) - Service d'Ordre Juif (Police Juive).

Organised by the Judenrat (Jewish Councils) and used in collaboration with Nazis forces inside of jewish ghettos, labour camps and concentration camps. They cooperated with Nazis in requisitions, raids, escorts of prisoners, of deportees and in deportation actions.

Since December 1940, its first Chief within the Warsaw's ghetto was Joseph Andrew Szerynski. A Polish jew who changed his name from Szenkman (or Szynkman or Szeinkman) into Szerynski. He was very known for his deep, great anti-semitism and is shown as an example of "full of hatred towards Jews", his own brothers and sisters in faith.

The Historian Raul Hilberg's researches show that inside of Warsaw's ghetto 2,500 jewish Policemen worked. Their Chief was Joseph Andrew Szerynski. His Assistant was Jacob Lejkin (Leykin). Inside of Lodz ghetto worked 1,200 jewish Policemen and in Lvov/Lwow Ghetto (today Lviv, Ukraine) have worked 500 jewish Policemen from the Ordnungsdienst.

Anatol Chari, a former member of this Jewish Police Service, describes his work in escorting of food, protecting of food reserves, controlling of bakery workers, patrols, visits and home's food confiscations. He describes too how the jewish policemen took part in crooking, management and in hiding of food for themselves, in sex abuses and sexual relationships for food or in preparation of transports to the camps.

Agents of this Jewish Police were young men, all volunteers, who served inside of the ghetto as support and supply forces to the German soldiers in controls, patrols and as entrance guards within the jewish sector. They were especially bad seen by the jewish population from the ghetto in times of troubles in several ghettos, because of their participation in the organisation of people deportations to the death camps.

Citations:

"The Jewish Police managed by the SS and Gendarmes pounced on the ghetto like wild animals. Each day, to save himself, each Jewish Policeman arrived with seven persons he has captured: friends, relatives, parents, cousins. Some of these Policemen, who have offered their old parents or grandparents, said to the Germans that "these persons will die quickly in any case".

Bernard Goldstein. Five Years in the Warsaw Ghetto. Dolphin, Doubleday. New York, 1961).

"The Jewish Police had been very bad noticed by the population for its bad behaviour and practises even before its participation to the death transports organisation. Contrary to the Polish Police which didn't participate in raids to labour camp, the Jewish Police, asked for it. Highly and especially corrupted, vile and immoral, the Jewish Police reached the top level of cruelty participating in deportation process of their brothers and sisters in faith, sending them th the Death. But the Jewish Police has been prepared to this dirty and hard work. That is why it has been well and professionally realised. Now, we can ask ourselves how it could be possible ? What happened that the Jews, usually intelligent and clever people, often lawyers (a majority of officers were before the IIWW lawyers) took part in killing themselves their own brothers ?"

Emanuel Ringelblum, "Chronique du ghetto de Varsovie/Chronicle of Warsaw's ghetto", with Artur Eisenbach, editions Czytelnik, Warszawa/Varsovie/Warsaw 1988, page 426.

"The Jewish Police gave proofs of its incomprehensible and savage brutality. Where came from this kind of hatred in our Polish Jews ? When have we brought up so many hundreds of killers, who kidnap children on the streets, who push them to the military lorries or to the Umschlag ?"

Emanuel Ringelblum, "Chronique du ghetto de Varsovie/Chronicle of Warsaw's ghetto", with Artur Eisenbach, editions Czytelnik, Warszawa/Varsovie/Warsaw 1988, page 427).
